Day 1 Porto to Arco 11 miles (about 17.7 km)

We were picked up from the hotel at around 9 AM and transported to Vilar Do Pinheiro to avoid the urban sprawl and congestion of Porto.  We are traveling with Portugal Green Walks.  Here we are at the drop-off with Paulo, one of the owners

Started getting religious as we walked on no-shoulder roads with cars flying by.


Interesting way of getting water. The object that looks like a wheel prevents animals or 2-legged "varmints" from getting in.

Roadside alter to St. Fatima. The Pope is in Fatima today.  As we are following the yellow arrows in one direction, we saw blue arrows directing pilgrimages to Fatima.

The weather was a bit rainy but not bad.

Day 9: Porrino to Arcade: 14.5 miles

Today had some difficulties. The altimetry revealed a steady climb from 35 m to 235 m, a steep descent to 30 m and then another later climb to 150 m, descent to 20, climb to 70 and then down to sea level. And of course it was a long walk. It also was primarily through urban and suburban areas with periodic oasis walks in the woods. Then we approached Arcade......Spectacular crescendo at the end. Day 3: Barcelos to Balugaes 10.7 miles

The Pope is still in Fatima, and we heard his mass through speakers on top of a barn and on a few TVs in cafes. The day was wetter, but we had ponchos, and the periodic periods of downpours allowed justification for cafe stops. In general another beautiful, scenic day in rural Portugal. We left about 8 AM this morning. The cockerel is prevalent in Barcelos. There is a well-known story about the rooster surrounding the Camino that is heard in several areas. Supposedly a roasted cock rose from the table of the judge who wrongly condemned a pilgrim to hang. The pilgrim stated that he was innocent, and if he was wrongly condemned then a dead cock would rise from the judge's table in proof of his righteousness.  When the boy was hung and the roasted cock stood up from the judge's plate. The judge hurried from his table to find the pilgrim alive, miraculous intervention of St. James and the Barcelos cockerel. Interesting plants-some sort of cactus plant Arouqu...
