Day 11: Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis 16 miles

Today was a long day, but the weather remains pleasant and not too hot. We had a couple of added interesting attractions and continue to meet and talk with several of the same people. The Irish sister-brother walked with us for quite awhile. Even though we make quite a few stops, we still made it to Caldas de Reis in 9 hours and that included my side-trip to see the 12 waterwheels (I only saw 4, but quite impressive.) I have been having a beer when we find a cafe a few km away. Allen asked me," When did you start drinking beer?" My response, "When I started walking an average of 12-14 miles daily."

Wonderful hotel, but awful internet (how spoiled I have become!). I couldn't get it to work last night in our room after coming back a bit late. Dinner was in an "International Restaurant." Called such because it was opened at 6 PM. Absolutely packed! What does that say about others adamant about the 9 PM dinner hour. Many of the walkers were there. Got up early and am trying up in the lobby, but I think I will be finishing Day 11 in Day 12.

Just as a reminder of how important the pilgrimage especially as we walk closer. Last picture of the  Virxen de la Peregrina church. I recently figured out that Peregrina is pilgrim (sorry, I'm slow).
Remember the scallop floor plan I mentioned yesterday.

Closer look at the pilgrim motif

We leave Pontevedra

And cross the Burgo bridge rebuilt in the 12 C on the 1st C Roman bridge. Note Camino Shell motif

Santa Maria de Alba church (I think. All these churches...although many are no longer in use. The authority and resources of the Church are mind boggling.)

Into the Woods-Great name for a play....

The Way across tracks

Isn't this great?

An Arcade a day keeps the ?????away

A bouquet of flowers living in harmony.

Beauty everywhere

About 1 km from the Way is the Ria Barosa National Park with 12 water mills interspersed along a 30 m drop.

Here are the first four

A diagram that illustrates them all.

The Way continues in the glorious rural setting. It is hard to get tired of it even as our feet and legs tire.

In case you couldn't find the frog in yesterday pictures.

Isn't this fantastic: solar, wind and cell tower- all in one.

In the village of Tivo about 2 km from our stop in Caldas de Reis, pilgrims taking advantage of 19 C fountain.

Notice that the wayside stone crosses are getting more elaborate. Tomorrow I have included an iconography of the different figures that are sculpted along with Jesus.

Santa Lucia "Chapel"

1260 gravestone-I believe

Our hotel was luxurious. Moses in his robe ready to part the thermal waters. Caldas de Reis has thermal springs and they are used in the swimming pool.

Just an interesting shot of an ancient church peeping into the swimming pool.

Friends,
Sunday was a blur as the days run together. The woods remain lush, The ubiquitous streams remain crystal clear. The mornings remain cool and the sun remains hot later in the day.My best dinner so far. A reasonable hour to devour more than a pound of grilled tiger prawns.
V is still drinking her way north to Santiago. Her new routine is a beer towards the end of the walk, and port in bed before we turn off the lights.
We have covered about 136 miles (after Monday which V will write about.) our last day is the longest, about 14.3 miles. Reminds me of a song from Les Miz, ONE DAY MORE. Our adventure is almost at an end.
Best, Shalom,
Moses
