Day 12: Caldas de Reis to Padron 15 miles and the day before Santiago!

Another lovely day with some interesting features. A little more about Caldas de Reis before we leave it. The thermal springs that are a continuous 40 C are central to its popularity from early times. As much of the way, it is situated on the Via Roman XIX. King Alfonso VII was born here. The Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas a' Becket has a church dedicated to him in Caldas de Reis. He made the pilgrimage to Santiago three years before his assassination.

Gorgeous River Bermana next to which we ate dinner on Day 11 at the International Restaurant

 Walking through Caldas de Reis

We continue on the Roman Road

On the reverse side of most of the stone crosses is now Lady of Piety. The next figure down is Lazarus, I believe and then a pilgrim.

Two Dutch pilgrims who we interacted with for several days. The Mother on the right will be 80 in two weeks. She was quite vigorous and pleasant.

Two more older Dutch women who carried everything with them. Quite impressive!

18 C  church of Santa Marina de Carracedo

I thought this little dog was a statute, but he/she was quite alive, but just watched everything coming and going through the block. Without a single bark

St. Lazarus, I believe

This woman was using a sickle to cut the long grass.

Allen making use of one of the many cool water springs

Much of the Way continues through quiet, shaded areas.

Parish Church of St. Michael

Vegetables!  Fried Pimentos

Yum!

Elements of the Passion

Scallop motif over the Church door

Flowers grow everywhere and on everything

River Sar that runs through and past Infesta and Padron

St. James

Pontecessures bridge, Roman origin with remnants dating from 12 C

As mentioned earlier, beautiful flowers find a way to bloom everywhere.

Three young men were at a cafe with their paddle ball bats. Allen began racquetball using a similar racquet.

Statue in Padron of a woman with a basket of the famous pimento peppers.

Padron, where the boat bearing the body of Saint James the Greaters from Jerusalem reputedly first moored. The town is named for the rock to which the boat was tied.

The painting depicting the body of St. James the Greater being brought to Padron is located in St. James.

Lady of Piety on reverse with St. Lazarus below and possibly a pilgrim.

Our longest, but last day tomorrow---Santiago!
